Ludhiana: Residents of wards falling under the East constituency have been facing a harrowing time due to choked sewerage that escalates the problem during the rainy season. Therefore, the residents await funds to be released under the Atal Mission for Rejuvenation and Urban Transformation (AMRUT) Phase-3 for the extension of a new sewer line to the treatment plant on Rahon Road.
The civic officials believe that it had become the need of the hour to extend the new sewer line to the treatment plant on Rahon Road and build a new sewage treatment plant with 50 MLD capacity. In this context, the MC officials said, they had also prepared an estimate for the project on the recommendation of Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) MLA Diljit Singh Grewal.
The MC officials claimed that to treat the domestic discharge of the city population, three treatment plants were installed in Bhattian, Balloke and Jamalpur. “The discharge of the city population is transported to treatment plants through different routes. The main sewer line laid in the middle of the road links the sewage treatment plant Bhattian via Jalandhar Road. Along this line, the discharge of areas of Shakti Nagar, Subhash Nagar, Noorwala, Bahadurke Road, Kailash Nagar, Noorwala, Kali Sadak, and Rahon Road has been linked with the main line.
Since the population in these areas is increasing and the main sewer line now appears to be small in relation to the population, hence, a new STP is required,” officials said.
According to the proposed plan, a 4-to-5-km-long sewer line will be laid on Rahon Road near Bajda village up to Bhattian sewage treatment plant.
It is being claimed that the discharge of half of the population of East constituency can be transported to the sewage treatment plant through the new sewer line. With the construction of new disposal pumps, water would be drained quickly and the problem of choked sewer would also get a permanent solution, officials claimed, adding that there had been a problem of drainage on Rahon Road for a long time, however, during the tenure of former MLA Sanjay Talwar, a disposal pump was installed in Basti Jodhewal Chowk, but during the rainy season, the need for further improvement was still felt.
