Patiala: Nearly four months after blight disease ravaged their tomato crops, many farmers in villages of Sanaur block of Patiala district have claimed that they are yet to receive compensation for their losses and are planning to seek answers from Lok Sabha election candidates hitting the campaign trails in their villages.
“The govt had conducted damage assessments but failed to provide any compensation to the farmers. It has not even given relief to farmers for crop losses during floods and hailstorms. We will confront politicians when they visit our villages for campaigning,” said Buta Singh Shadipur of BKU (Sidhupur) Union.
Farmers Sukhdeep Singh, Harpal Singh and Harjinder Singh from Fatehpur Rajputan village said they have suffered losses ranging from Rs 1 to 1.5 lakh per acre. “Despite revenue officials conducting assessments three months ago, the affected farmers have not got any compensation,” said Harpal.
Patiala deputy commissioner Showkat Ahmad Parray said, “I will have to check and verify about the claims of farmers.” Similarly, sub-divisional magistrate Arvind Kumar evaded a direct reply, saying he would have to get the matter checked as he had joined in Feb this year only.
Tomato crop is sown in around 1,200 acres in Patiala district, mostly in the Sanaur block. More than 500 acres of crop was badly damaged due to the blight disease in Asarpur, Fatehpur Rajputan, Kartarpur, Noor Khedian, Bosar Khurd, Jogipur and Khudda villages. To prevent further spread, many farmers had resorted to uprooting their damaged crops.
