New Delhi: The winter session of Parliament, likely to start from November 25 and conclude on December 23, is expected to take up several landmark legislation for consideration, including the Waqf (Amendment) Bill.

On the second day of the session, a special joint sitting is likely to be held in the Central Hall of the Samvidhan Sadan (old Parliament building) to mark the 75th Constitution Day.

The Constituent Assembly adopted the Constitution in 1949 in the same building. The Constitution came into effect on January 26, 1950.

While earlier November 26 used to be celebrated as National Law Day, in 2015 the Modi government announced that it would be observed as Constitution Day, marking the 125th birth anniversary of BR Ambedkar.

The session is expected to take up the Waqf (Amendment) Bill after considering the suggestions made by the joint parliamentary committee on the draft legislation.

There would be 21 sittings in all in this session, which will be held just after the results of the crucial assembly polls in Maharashtra and Jharkhand. After its victory in the Haryana assembly elections, if BJP is able to win these two states, it would give the ruling party more elbow room to push through its legislative agenda. BJP’s defeat, however, would give the Opposition parties a much-needed boost to pressurise the government to discuss issues which they feel are important. It is expected that the government may also inform Parliament about the India-China disengagement process in eastern Ladakh.
