Edelweiss CEO Radhika reveals she sometimes ‘cries at work’, bosses find her ‘too emotional’
Edelweiss Mutual Fund Managing Director and CEO Radhika Gupta, who was also a judge on the popular show Shark Tank, shared her experience of being labelled “too emotional” by her bosses and noted that she still sometimes cries at work. On Friday in Bengaluru, Gupta encouraged women entrepreneurs to embrace their feminine leadership qualities and scale their businesses despite societal expectations.

“I have been told by people that I am ‘too emotional’ and that it would hurt my work as a leader. However, the same person, after seeing my performance, later acknowledged that being emotional is actually my core strength and helps me be a good boss,” she said, adding that finding one’s own voice is essential for entrepreneurs.

Edelweiss CEO was speaking at an event organised by IIM Bangalore’s NSRCEL business incubator and the Goldman Sachs ‘10,000 Women Finance for Growth’ initiative, which focuses on supporting women entrepreneurs.

Speaking about the need for women to stop being apologetic, Gupta said that displaying emotions should be acceptable. “If men on trading floors can express aggression during market volatility and use bad words, my occasional meltdown—which hasn’t impacted my team’s performance for seven years—is also valid,” she remarked, admitting that she still cries at work on certain occasions.


Advising women on how to scale their businesses in a competitive market, the Edelweiss CEO emphasised the importance of finding “leverage.” “You constantly need to find ways to leverage—leverage people and leverage processes. When you’re an early-stage startup, investing in building processes, staying on top of regulatory actions, and creating a strong foundation are essential,” she advised.Gupta also highlighted qualities that give women an advantage in leadership. “Over the years, I’ve realised the power of feminine qualities in leadership. Women are naturally skilled at managing various constituencies—a talent that’s called ‘stakeholder management’ in the corporate world.”She gave the example of households, where mothers manage “customer or family member experiences” without any platforms or tools. “Women are attuned to multitasking and overseeing diverse teams. It’s an underrated strength that I bring to the table as I lead 15 diverse teams, multitasking and bringing different perspectives to the table.”

Gupta also highlighted that women entrepreneurs possess a strong risk appetite and are naturally good at crisis management.
