West Bengal: Two women die in Maha Kumbh stampede, state govt to send team to Prayagraj for victim review
Kolkata: Two women from West Bengal died in the stampede at the Maha Kumbh in Prayagraj on Wednesday. Their bodies were being brought back to Bengal on Thursday. Meanwhile, the West Bengal government has decided to send its team to Prayagraj to review the actual number of victims from West Bengal.

Basanti Poddar (65) from Golf Green’s Aswininagar area in Kolkata and Urmila Bhuniyan (78) from West Midnapore district’s Salboni died in the stampede.

Poddar had gone to Prayagraj Mahakumbh, along with her sister, son and daughter. Poddar had reportedly fallen during the stampede as she was going towards the Triveni Sangam following pressure from the crowd.

The family has raised concern as the bodies were being sent without a proper death certificate.

Tapan Dasgupta, the local councillor, said, “The death certificate has not been issued. Only a paper was given with a signature of the son. This has been done to evade compensation.”

Poddar’s body will be brought to Kolkata’s MR Bangur Hospital in Kolkata. West Bengal minister Aroop Biswas has slammed the Yogi Adityanath government for the mismanagement and said there was an attempt to hide things under the carpet.“There were no police or volunteers. There was no cooperation from the police and administration. Suddenly, the crowd surged and we all fell. I was unconscious and was rescued. My mother was rescued after 15 minutes. Three people were lying on my mother. The authorities said the death certificate will be sent after ten days,” Poddar’s son said on reaching Kolkata.Urmila Bhuniyan (78) had gone to Maha Kumbh with her daughter and son-in-law. Dulal Bhuniyan, a relative of Urmila, said, “Urmila’s body will be coming to Bengal through the state administration. It will reach Kharagpur and then we will receive the body from the police.”

On Wednesday, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee had indirectly hinted towards a lack of “planning and care” which led to the mishap.

She referred to the arrangements made by her administration at Sagar Islands in South 24 Parganas district in West Bengal every year on the occasion of the annual religious event of Gangasagar Mela.
