Vidarbha clinch third Ranji Trophy title despite draw against Kerala in final

Vidarbha were crowned the winners of the Ranji Trophy 2024/25 after taking the first innings lead in the final against Kerala. Danish Malewar was named the Player of the Match after his 153 and 73 in the two innings.

Vidarbha were crowned champions of the Ranji Trophy 2024/25 after their final against Kerala ended in a draw on Day 5 of the clash at the Vidarbha Cricket Association Stadium, Nagpur. Owing to their first innings lead of 37, Vidarbha were adjudged the winners of the final and the champions of the domestic premier tournament.

Danish Malewar, a 21-year-old star, starred with the bat in both innings. He slammed 153 in Vidarbha’s opening innings, when they amassed 379 after Kerala inserted him to bat. Malewar was once again up to the task in the second innings, helping his team swell their lead and bat long. Malewar hit 73 as Vidarbha scored 375/9 in the second innings. They had a lead of 412, and as the result looked impossible, the players shook their hands to settle for a stalemate.

Vidarbha began the final day on 249/4 with a lead of 286. Overnight pair of centurion Karun Nair and captain Akshay Wadkar resumed the proceedings. Runs didn’t flow at the start of the day, and when Nair looked to push the throttle, he was stumped out for 135. Kerala had a mini-belief and hoped to get the remaining five wickets.

They got Harsh Dubey and captain Wadkar in the next 13 overs to send Vidarbha seven down. However, Akshay Karnewar and Darshan Nalkande played out the time and frustrated the Kerala bowlers. They took the lead beyond 400 and out of Kerala’s hands. Right when Nalkande got to his fifty, the players shook hands as the game ended in a draw.

For his 153 and 73 in the two innings, Danish Malewar was named the Player of the Match. Harsh Dubey, who had a spectacular season with the ball, was named as the Player of the Tournament. Dubey took 68 wickets and shattered the record for most wickets in a single season of the Ranji trophy.
