DC boss James Gunn has shared the first look at the upcoming Superman movie’s villain The Engineer, played by María Gabriela de Faría. The post was dropped on the occasion of The Engineer’s anniversary. This behind-the-scenes sneak peek comes months after it was confirmed that the highly anticipated 2025 blockbuster will be part of the summer movie lineup.
In the DC Comics universe, The Engineer, also known as Angela Spica, is a part of the antihero team known as The Authority. The character possesses the ability to create advanced weaponry and can even resize her body with the help of nanotechnology. While it’s still unclear whether this version of The Engineer will have the same powers, we do know Maria will serve as an antagonist to Superman, played by David Corenswet.
To mark the anniversary of The Engineer’s debut, James Gunn posted a tribute on social media. “Happy Anniversary to the Engineer,” he wrote referring to the character created by Warren Ellis and Bryan Hitch. Gunn also praised Gabriela de Faría’s portrayal of the character as “played to sinister perfection” in the upcoming film.
In the photo, The Engineer appears to be lying on the grassy ground, looking less than lively at LordTech Field, possibly after a showdown with Superman or simply resting behind the scenes. Previous set photos had already teased a battle between the two characters. While the image suggests a more serious moment, it’s likely that de Faría was just having fun on set.

According to the movie’s official synopsis, “James Gunn takes on the original superhero in the newly imagined DC universe with a singular blend of epic action, humor and heart, delivering a Superman who’s driven by compassion and an inherent belief in the goodness of humankind.”
“And that’s a wrap,” James Gunn said earlier this year, dropping the big update and simultaneously confirming the release “God bless our cast and crew whose commitment, creativity, and hard work have brought this project to life. I set out to make a movie about a good man in a world that isn’t always so much. And the goodness and kindness and love I’ve encountered on a daily basis on the set has inspired me and thrust me forward when I felt too spent to move on my own,” he added.

The filmmaker continued, “Thank you all from the bottom of my heart. It has been an honor. The destination has been Superman, but the journey has been the toil and the laughter and the emotions and ideas and magic we’ve shared together on set – and for that I am forever grateful.”
