Alia Bhatt is an actor, producer, entrepreneur, but she’s self-admittedly not a cook. That prompted her to start a YouTube series — In My Mama’s Kitchen — on her channel, in which she learns cooking from her mother and veteran actor Soni Razdan. While the first episode was all about Mac and Cheese, the second episode, that was dropped on Monday, is a tutorial on how to make Soni’s signature apple crumble.
In the video, as Soni starts preparing, Alia says, “Now, tell me what to do.” “You stand here and watch,” responded Soni, much to Alia’s bewilderment. When Alia objects and says, “But this is about me learning how to cook,” Soni hands over the bowl to her and says, “Oh sorry, I thought it was about me cooking and you looking.” “What is the point,” replies an amused Alia. Soni assumed that Alia wanted to learn cooking only by watching her mom demonstrate.
As Alia mixes the flour, brown sugar, and butter, Soni shows her how to mix it with her fingers so that it looks like bread crumble. Soni even reprimands for hurrying up and asks her to mix the batter gradually. “I think it looks good! Who’s going to eat it, that’s the question.”
“I think we’ll send some for Shaheen (Bhatt, Alia’s sister), some for Raha (Kapoor, Alia and Ranbir Kapoor’s daughter), and then you can get it out of my house because I don’t need to eat any more sweet stuff this month. (Laughs) I think I’m done with my quota,” says Soni.
As Soni asks Alia to mix sesame into the batter, she says, “That’s so random. I didn’t think til (sesame) would go into apple crumble.” “Ya, but it’s so tasty, you won’t even realize it’s there,” Soni responds. Soni then demonstrates to Alia how to sprinkle clove, nutmeg, and castor sugar onto cut and peeled apples. When Soni insists Alia to sprinkle “nicely,” she laughs and asks, “What’s so un-nice about it?” “I mean put it evenly,” Soni clarifies. They sprinkle the crumble on the apples and then put it in the oven for 35 minutes.
Once it’s ready, Soni asks Alia to take a spoonful. They pour cream onto the crumble before Alia is about it. When she asks Soni to taste it too, she refuses and says, “It’s very hot.” “Why are you making me have it then? I don’t understand,” says Alia. She takes a bit and says, “It’s so good!” Soni also follows up and approves.

After Alia signs off and begins to take another serving from the hot container, she burns her hand and exclaims. As Soni asks her to put her hand under running cold water, Alia says, “I’m fine,” and licks her finger instead. She then puts her hand under the water as she takes another bite of the apple crumble. As she continues to eat, Alia says, laughing, “I thought you don’t feel like eating after cooking.”
