Apoorva Mukhija apologises for her comments on India’s Got Latent, recalls the ‘dehumanising’ experience: ‘Samay Raina asked him to behave multiple times’

Apoorva Mukhija aka The Rebel Kid, who was one of the judges on the panel during that infamous episode of Samay Raina’s show India’s Got Latent, took to YouTube on Wednesday evening and recalled the events that happened on that particular episode. She also shared the aftermath of the incident where trolls on the internet issued rape threats, threatened her with acid attack and made her life miserable. In the video, Apurva also apologised for her comments on the show and said that her jokes were not funny. Apoorva was part of the panel on the show which landed in controversy over Ranveer Allahabadia’s ‘sex with parents’ comment. After a nationwide uproar, the show was taken off YouTube, multiple FIRs filed against them and an investigation was started.

She started her video by saying that people advised her to not speak about the issue, and move on with her life as if nothing had happened. Apurva recalled that she first met Samay at an event in August 2024 where he asked her if she wanted to be on his show. She was elated and eventually, they shot for this particular episode in November.

“It was a 6-7 hour long shoot and there was a 30 minute break in the middle. So in the first half, I didn’t say anything. I just made one joke about being a computer science engineer who doesn’t speak to civil engineering students. That’s it. I was sitting there and freaking out that I can’t do this. I texted my manager that I don’t want to be here and she told me that don’t overthink, be yourself,” she recalled. Apurva said that she had a “full blown panic attack” in the green room during the break because she felt like she wasn’t being funny on the show and Samay consoled her.

“Samay sat down with me and told me that ‘Apurva, I also go through this kind of pressure that I will have to be funny but it’s okay, no one is expecting you to be funny, you are not a stand-up comic, you are just an influencer, influencers are not supposed to be funny,” she recalled. Apurva said that it was during the second half of the show when the controversial contestant came on the stage and started speaking rudely to one of her friends who was sitting in the audience. “This guy comes on stage and he was saying some disrespectful stuff and trying to be funny. Samay asked him to behave multiple times but he was at it,” she said.

“Then this boy goes to on to say things about my vagina in front of everybody. And usually, you expect people to say things like that online because they can be anonymous there and they know there are no real consequences, but you don’t expect people to say something like that in front of a live audience. So when I said that statement, it genuinely did not come from a place of being funny or creating a moment or being savage, it genuinely came from anger and retaliation. My intention wasn’t to hurt anyone, except for that guy’s ego,” she said.

Apurva then apologised for her words on the show and said that she never meant to hurt anyone. “Irrespective of my intention, I have hurt a lot of people and that is honestly the last thing I want to do. I genuinely create content to entertain people and to make them laugh. I never wanted to hurt anybody and I am very very sorry. I should have been more mindful of my words but I have learnt my lesson and I promise I will do better going forward. I just hope you guys can forgive me and I am very sorry if I hurt your sentiments,” she said.

Apurva said that after this, she made a couple of more jokes but those too, were in bad taste. “After this, I made a couple of more jokes and they also are in very bad taste. When I heard those jokes, I didn’t find them funny. I am literally in your team. I don’t know why I was saying these random things just to seem cool but I am very sorry. They were all in bad taste and I should not have said such stupid things on a show,” she said.

Apurva said that she feared that people wouldn’t find her funny but did not imagine that people would find this problematic as this was the tone of India’s Got Latent. After the episode dropped in February, Apurva learnt that there were multiple FIR’s against her and there was an army on Twitter that was posting against her. “It is impossible for so many humans to tweet the same thing unless and until somebody is asking them to tweet the same thing,” she said.

She shared that after this, she was told by her manager that she cannot go back to her house as people might attack her and it wasn’t safe for her to be there as many people know where she lives. “I started reading my DMs and they were all graphic of how people want to rape me, throw acid and stuff like that,” she said. Apurva said that on the day when she went to record her statement with the police, she “cried so much” and it was a “dehumanising” experience because of the way paparazzi behaved with her.

She shared that amid all of this, her parents supported her but trolls found her mother’s social media and started writing nasty stuff in the comments section. As a result, her blood pressure shot up. “I deserve this because I did this. My parents did not deserve this,” she said.

Apurva ended her video by saying that she doesn’t want to profit of off her misery and will donate the earnings from this video to an “NGO that helps acid attack victims, rape victims and victims of domestic violence.”
