Chadwick Boseman once ‘freaked out’ Disney staff with his Wakandan accent on Black Panther set: ‘He doesn’t turn it off’

Ryan Coogler recently opened up about the late American actor Chadwick Boseman and how his untimely death from colon cancer impacted him. Appearing on a recent episode of The Breakfast Club (via PEOPLE), Coogler, who directed Marvel’s Black Panther, where Boseman played the titular and iconic role of T’Challa, shared an incident from the set. He recalled just how seriously Chadwick took his role and how his full-on commitment actually left Disney executives a little freaked out when they came to visit.

According to the Sinners director, Chadwick didn’t just play the Wakandan king — he became him. “He was talking in an African accent from day one,” the director shared, remembering the moment some Disney execs dropped by the set in the second week of filming. “They were freaked out,” Coogler said. “I was like, ‘Don’t be freaked out, he is working. He doesn’t turn it off till we wrap.’” Over his two-decade Hollywood career, Boseman starred in four MCU films, including the eponymous 2018 hit. He also became the first Black actor to headline a solo installment.

Coogler also shared how Boseman’s death hit Michael B. Jordan the hardest. The two had worked closely on Black Panther, where Jordan played the villain Erik Killmonger. “Chad was older than us, a real man’s man from the South,” Coogler said. “Me and Mike, we felt like kids next to him. He changed my life. He taught without preaching, it was all by example.” He added, “What he gave me and Michael was patience. He moved at an old-school pace, and he took his time. He was always early.” That same discipline is something Coogler carried over while working on Sinners. He even found himself telling Jordan, “Hey bro, what would Chad do in this role?” Chadwick Boseman passed away in August 2020 after a battle with colon cancer. He was just 43.

A look at Chadwick Boseman’s MCU legacy

Boseman, a Howard graduate who kicked off his film career performing in theatres, started his MCU run in 2016, portraying the Marvel Comics character T’Challa / Black Panther. He signed a five-picture deal with the studio, with Captain America: Civil War being his first appearance. Reportedly, it was Boseman who came up with the Wakandan accent after learning Xhosa from John Kani, the actor who played his father in the film. After impressing critics and fans in Civil War, Boseman landed his first MCU solo. Focused on T’Challa and his homeland, Wakanda, Boseman teamed up with director Ryan Coogler in the 2018 films, where he played the key role.

Speaking to AP once, Boseman said he actually “related himself more with Black Panther’s nemesis, Killmonger, since his own ties to his African heritage had been severed.” The film went on to become one of the highest-grossing MCU installments. It was also seen as a landmark achievement, being the first to feature an almost all-Black cast and director, as well as the first big-budget superhero movie to be nominated for an Academy Award for Best Picture. That same year, Boseman was included on the Time 100 list as one of the world’s most influential people. He soon reprised his role in Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame, released in 2018 and 2019, respectively. Before his death, he was reportedly in talks with Coogler for the Black Panther sequel.
