Divya Dutta once performed her memorable solo act in front of director Yash Chopra and all she hoped was that the director would get so impressed that he offers her a role opposite Shah Rukh Khan. Unfortunately, that never happened. She started her acting career until one day, she got a call from his office for a role in his film Veer-Zaara.
“I used to do a show on Sahara, which I think, Aditya Chopra watched. He then called me. I was very happy and reached Yash Raj Productions office. I had a meeting with both Yash Ji and Aditya,” Divya shared with Neelesh Mishra on his YouTube channel. This was the meeting where she was narrated the story of Veer-Zaara but her excitement didn’t last for long.
“They shared that the film will feature Preity Zinta as Zaara, then Rani Mukerji is in the film, Amitabh Bachchan, Hema Malini, Anupam Kher, Kirron Kher, Manoj Bajpayee, I was like what role am I going to play and they said, ‘Zaara’s friend, Shabbo’,” she recalled and said that she was fully aware that if she took up this role, she would get slotted as the ‘heroine’s best friend’ and would find it very hard to break that image. And so, she decided to take some time to think about it.
She shared that she went home disappointed and shared her dilemma with her mother. “I went home all sad. I shared this with my mother and she convinced me. She said ‘whatever role you are getting, just do it with honesty, so much that no one can ignore you for your role, make them talk about you’.” Divya wanted to play the heroine, not her best friend, yet she took her mother’s advice. “I finally accepted the role. I started my preparation, but I was still very skeptical given the huge star cast. Still, I did my best,” she said.
Divya attended the film’s star-studded premiere with her mother and immediately afterwards, she tasted stardom for the first time in her life. “When I headed out, for the first time in my career, I was surrounded by people. That was the first time I tasted stardom. I signed autographs, clicked pictures. Yash uncle called me there and held my hand and introduced me to all of them. People were asking for me, they thought I was from Pakistan. That film made people recognise me,” she recalled.
While Veer-Zaara got her to experience fame, she also realised that she was right about being typecast as she only received roles that were quite similar to Shabbo. “I said no to many such scripts and sat at home for almost a year until I landed another role where I wasn’t a Punjabi girl. I was avoiding doing the same kind of role. I didn’t want to get bored,” she said.
Divya was last seen in Vicky Kaushal-starrer Chhaava.
