PATIALA: With five days having passed since the first death in the Sangrur hooch tragedy and questions being raised over inaction by Punjab State Commission for Scheduled Castes, the panel’s acting chairperson on Sunday cited the absence of a report from the deputy commissioner (DC) for lack of action.
Punjab State Human Rights Commission, National Human Rights Commission, and Election Commission have already intervened and sought reports from relevant authorities on the matter.
Commission’s acting chairperson, D K Tiwari, said Sangrur deputy commissioner was yet to submit a report on the tragedy. “We are waiting for the report,” he said.
A majority of families affected by the tragedy belong to Dalit community.
Sources said powers to take cognizance or suo motu action in such matters were vested with the Punjab state commission’s chairman only.
The state govt’s two-week-old decision to appoint Tiwari, a person from the general category, as the acting chairman has fuelled criticism.
Tiwari, who also serves as additional chief secretary in Punjab department of social justice empowerment and minorities, has been entrusted with the additional responsibility of leading the SC commission.
