Amritsar: With the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) formally announcing to contest the upcoming Lok Sabha elections independently in Punjab, the Akali leadership is restrategising its election approach.
The Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) had earlier announced its ‘principles-above-politics’ approach at a recently held core committee meeting giving indications at going solo in the elections keeping an eye on 2027 assembly elections.Sikh political analyst Ravinder Singh said that SAD had a vote share of 34% in Punjab, which came down to around 20% in the 2022 assembly elections “owing to the party’s approach towards Punjab, Punjabi, and panthic issues”.
“The senior taksali party leaders — such as Sukhdev Singh Dhindsa, Sewa Singh Sekhwan, Bibi Jagir Kaur, Gurpartap Singh Tikka to name a few — started abandoning the party or were shown the door, which further damaged the party’s reputation”, Singh said.
