Ludhiana: For the first time in the district, government school uniforms are being made by self-help groups (SHGs). This is being done under the “Pehel” project initiated by Punjab State Rural Livelihood Mission (PSRLM). The target in the first phase is to produce 10,000 uniform kits for 76 government schools in seven blocks of the district.A total of 5,700 uniforms are already being made by members of the SHG while the rest will be completed before the session begins, officials said.
The uniform was launched by deputy commissioner Sakshi Sawhney on Feb 23 in a meeting held with the education department. Additional deputy commissioner (D) Anmol Singh Dhaliwal is the nodal officer of this project. The uniform kit includes summer and winter wear for girl and boy students. A salwar and dupatta for girl students and pants for boys, besides a shirt, shoes, socks, pullover and a woollen cap.
In Ludhiana, this is being done at two locations, one at Leehan village, Sidhwan Bet block and Manakwal village at Ludhiana 1 block. Here, members are operating at the cluster-level federation office, where machinery has been installed. A total of 70 SHG members were trained by the rural self-employment and training institute (RSETI).
Neelesh Gupta, product development and management officer with PSRLM and cluster coordinator at Sidhwa Bet block said, “The self-help group has started making uniforms for students of classes 1 to 8 in government schools from the last week of Jan. We are trying to give employment opportunities to those who can stitch. They are given Rs 600 per kit and they earn around Rs 150 per stitched uniform. We ensure that quality is maintained with the best of the stitching standard.”
Training is being given to other 35 members of self-help groups for Samrala for uniforms to be distributed in the next session. More SHGs will be trained to deliver uniforms in 19 blocks of the district, added Neelesh.
To promote inclusive education, the government provides comprehensive uniform kits to all students enrolled in government schools free of cost every year. Deputy commissioner Sakshi Sawhney told TOI, “As a pilot project under Pehel, the contract for provisioning of uniform kits to government schools is provided to SHG members of seven blocks, with total kits executed around 10,000. This is the first ever project in the district.”
