Chandigarh: Five years after losing the parliamentary election from Sonipat, Haryana’s former chief minister and current leader of opposition Bhupinder Singh Hooda on Friday looked back and regretted picking that seat when his son was in the fray from Rohtak.
Asked why he wasn’t interested in another Lok Sabha election, Hooda said: “That is because Deepender Hooda is being considered for candidature.I would have come forward in case he was not there. Had Deepender contested alone from Rohtak in 2019, he would not have lost and I could have taken care of that constituency.” Attention divided in 2019, Deepender lost to Arvind Sharma of the BJP by 7,500 votes, while Bhupinder Hooda lost from Sonipat to BJP’s Ramesh Kaushik by more than 1.64 lakh votes. The Congress lost all 10 seats Lok Sabha seats in Haryana.
On Friday, Hooda inducted former legislator Arjun Singh and Naraingarh’s former Haryana Janhit Congress (HJC) member Dhoom Singh Rana into the Congress in the presence of state party president Udai Bhan. Hooda claimed at this event that the Congress and its I.N.D.I.A. bloc will make a clean sweep of Lok Sabha seats in Haryana and the candidate list could be out by the first week of April.
Replying to BJP’s former CM Manohar Lal Khattar and incumbent Nayab Singh Saini who had claimed that a weak opposition struggled to find willing candidates, Hooda said: “Our screening committee will meet on March 31 and recommend the names to our central election committee. We’ll suggest the best people to reclaim all seats.” He circumvented queries related to the joining of former Union minister Birender Singh, while Udai Bhan, who confirmed that Birender had not taken party’s formal membership yet, said his support had strengthened the party.
