Chandigarh: The Ambala police have arrested Navdeep Singh Jalbera and Gurkirat Singh Shahpur in a case of rioting and various violations reported on Feb 13 at the Shambhu interstate border.
Navdeep had shot into limelight for diverting water cannon during the farmers’ agitation. He along with Gurkirat was arrested from Mohali airport. The two were sent into two police remand by the court.
Earlier, seeking four-day police remand of the duo, the investigating officer informed duty magistrate Vivek Chaudhary that custodial interrogation of the accused was required as the case properties were to be recovered and information regarding other accused too had to be ascertained from them.
Acceding to a police request, amidst strong opposition by the defence counsel, the court ordered two days remand for the accused.
The case dates back to Feb 13 when various farmer organisations who had given ‘Dilli Chalo’ call were stopped near the Shambhu border. According to the FIR, some of the farmer leaders, including Navdeep and Gurkirat, attacked the police personnel who had tried to stop them.
A case under Sections 307, 147, 148, 332 and 353 of the IPC and Sections of the National Highway Act was registered in this regard at Sadar police station of Ambala.
Meanwhile, the arrests have triggered resentment among the agitating farmers, who accused the Haryana Police of hounding the farmer leaders and serving them notices to join the probe.
Notably, the farmer organisations have been protesting at the Shambhu and Khannauri interstate borders for the last 46 days.
Farmer leader Amarjit Singh Mohri termed the arrests as an outcome of the popularity of the ‘Kalash Yatra’ of Shubkaran Singh, who lost his life during the protest. He said the yatra was gaining momentum in Haryana.
The yatra is scheduled to conclude with a kisan mahapanchayat at Mohri Mandi, Ambala, on March 31, where homage will be paid to Shubkaran Singh.
“The Haryana Police started raiding the houses of the farmer leaders and notices were pasted outside the houses of nearly 50 farmer leaders, asking them to appear before the police. The police personnel who went to raid the houses of farmer leaders and paste notices faced heavy opposition from the villages. In many villages, women, elders and youth got together and stopped the police from entering their villages, and the police had to return empty handed,” said Mohri.
