Chandigarh: Punjab chief minister Bhagwant Mann brought home his newborn daughter with his wife Dr Gurpreet Kaur and said that they had named her Niyamat (divine blessing) Kaur Mann.
To the beats of a dhol, a beaming Mann carried the newborn in his arms, accompanied by his wife and sister. He told mediapersons, “It is a big day for my family to have been blessed with a healthy child.She’s coming home for the first time. My relatives are already waiting inside to celebrate her arrival, just the way it is done in rural families of the Malwa region.”
Mann said he and his wife had decided to name the newborn ‘Niyamat,’ adding that they got the idea while listening to a song about four days back. “The song goes…Niyamat, rab di daat, khuda di bakshish…Niyamat means bakshish of God (divine blessing). The house has been decked up for her,” he said.
He added, “I wish to tell people that it doesn’t matter if it’s a boy or a girl. We should pray that the child is healthy. Secondly, the child should be given an opportunity to get a good education and allowed to chase their dreams. Girls have excelled in every field and proved that they are no less in any way.”
Replying to a question, Mann said he avoided making visits to the private hospital in Mohali during his wife’s check-ups to ensure that other patients did not face inconvenience due to his security protocols. “I only went there in the night when my wife was admitted and now to bring home the newborn,” he said.
Reacting to AAP supremo Arvind Kejriwal congratulating him a day before, Mann said he was family. “He is like my elder brother. What would I say — whether he has become a ‘tau’ or a ‘dada’?” he said. Kejriwal, who was produced in Delhi’s Rouse Avenue court by the enforcement directorate on Thursday, had told mediapersons while coming out of the court, “Mann Saab has been blessed with a daughter. Many congratulations to him.”
