Randeep Hooda accepts he married late, says he’s the first man in his family to marry outside of caste: ‘There were more security personnel than guests in my baraat’

Randeep Hooda and Lin Laishram tied the knot a couple of years ago, demonstrating a union of different castes and regions. While he’s a jaat who hails from Haryana, she belongs to Manipur. The two had their wedding ceremony in traditional Manipuri style in Imphal, the capital city of the North-Eastern state.

Randeep recently revealed he never intended to marry, but that changed after meeting Lin. “I used to be very sad in school. I would think that I wouldn’t like to bring another person into this world who’d go through schooling like I did (laughs). So I never had the intention, but somehow our paths crossed and I’m very happy that they did. I got a little late in getting married because I joke that I don’t have a government job,” said Randeep.

He also opened up on Shubhankar Mishra’s podcast why he chose to go to the North-East to get married. “It’s also a part of our country. One doesn’t really consider caste, religion, country, or age when one falls in love. We just got along and complemented each other,” said Randeep. He clarified that their union wasn’t free of hurdles either.

“There were complications. Like anyone else’s, my parents also wanted that I marry within the caste. That’s quite prevalent in Jaats. In fact, I’m the first one from my family to marry a non-Jaat. So everybody had a problem with that, but it gradually went away. There was a problem going on in Manipur at the time of our wedding. But I thought the wedding should take place in the bride’s city. I wanted to support and respect my wife and her family’s culture,” said Randeep.

He had to make sure that he had support of the Indian Army so that they could deploy enough security personnel to execute the wedding smoothly. In fact, him and nine members of his family who went to Manipur from Haryana stayed at an army brigadier’s home. “The security escorted us everywhere. We had more security personnel than the baraatis (guests from the groom’s side). There were only 10 of us because we didn’t want to put too much burden on the bride’s family. And since the environment was problematic, I didn’t want too much fanfare,” said Randeep.

The actor added that he was overwhelmed by the love the entire country gave to him, Lin, and the Manipuri culture after his wedding pictures came out. Everyone lauded them for doing a very Hindustani-style wedding despite being in Bollywood. “We had a very simple ceremony, but it caught the people’s fancy. There was no internet there. Later, we got to know that our wedding was being livestreamed. We don’t know who arranged for that,” said Randeep.

Randeep and Lin, who’s also an actor, met while working on a play that he was acting in and she was helping in organizing. They kept meeting each other on and off, before living together during the pandemic. Randeep made Lin visit his ancestral village in Haryana, after which the wedding talks began.
