Anurag Kashyap issues second apology to Brahmin community, says his family is hurt: ‘Derailed my own point from the issue’

A couple of days after an FIR was filed against Anurag Kashyap for his remarks against the Brahmin community on X, the filmmaker has issued an apology. It’s his second apology in two days, but his apology on Tuesday comes across as more ‘sincere’ than his previous conditional apology on Monday.

The filmmaker took to X and wrote in Hindi, translated as: “In my anger, I forgot my decorum while responding to someone and ended up speaking ill of the entire Brahmin community. That community, whose many members have been part of my life, are still there, and contribute greatly. Today, they are all hurt by me. My family is hurt by me. Many intellectuals, whom I respect, are hurt by my anger and the way I spoke.”

He explained that his comment was not intentional, but a reaction in a heated exchange with an individual on X. “By saying such things, I myself derailed my own point from the issue. I sincerely apologize to this community, to whom I did not intend to say this, but in the heat of the moment, I wrote it while responding to someone’s vile comment,” said Kashyap.

I apologize to all my supportive friends, my family, and that community for my way of speaking and for using inappropriate language. Going forward, I will work to ensure this does not happen again. I will work on my anger. And if I need to address an issue, I will use the right words. I hope you will forgive me,” he added.

An FIR was registered against Kashyap in Jaipur for his remarks on Brahmins on X. The case was registered based on a complaint lodged by Anil Chaturvedi, a Barkat Nagar resident, on Saturday night. The complainant alleged that the director posted abusive words about Brahmins while replying to a social media user. Chanakya Sena leader Pandit Suresh Mishra also announced a cash reward of Rs 1 lakh for blackening Kashyap’s face.

Kashyap was defending Ananth Mahadevan’s historical drama Phule, based on the life of social reformer couple Jyotiba Phule and Savitribai Phule, slated to release on April 25, after it had courted controversy over its portrayal of caste. Kashyap had questioned the row surrounding the film and while replying to a social media user, the director made the contentious remark against the Brahmin community.

After being widely trolled for the comment, Kashyap apologised on Saturday. In an Instagram post, he wrote, “This is my apology, not for my post but for that one line taken out of context and the brewing hatred. No action or speech is worth your daughter, family, friends and colleagues getting rape and death threats from the kingpins of sanskar (manners). I won’t take back what I said. Abuse me all you want. My family didn’t say anything. If you want an apology, here it is.”
